Most people who read Reddit on any given day never sign in, and the company now wants that to end. On Thursday, CEO Steve Huffman said Reddit will start testing a Reddit login wall in select markets outside the US this quarter, after Google’s AI answers cut the search traffic that has fed the site for years. Reddit’s own third-quarter numbers show how much of its audience sits on the wrong side of that wall.
According to the company’s results release, Reddit averaged 130.3 million daily active uniques (DAUq) in the July–September quarter. Of those, 76.8 million were logged out. That is 59% of the daily audience, people who arrive, usually from a search result, read a thread and leave without an account.
The 76.8 million readers without an account
Reddit split its audience by login status in the release, and the table is more revealing than the headline growth figure. We pulled the key rows together below.
| Q3 2026 daily uniques | Global | US | International |
|---|---|---|---|
| Logged-in | 53.5M (+7%) | 23.4M (+1%) | 30.1M (+11%) |
| Logged-out | 76.8M (+17%) | 27.3M (−4%) | 49.5M (+33%) |
| Total | 130.3M (+12%) | 50.7M (−2%) | 79.6M (+24%) |
| Revenue per daily unique | $6.87 | $13.82 | $2.43 |
Three things stand out. First, logged-out readers drove most of the past year’s growth. Reddit added 14.3 million daily uniques year over year, and 11 million of them were logged out. International logged-out readers alone grew by 12.2 million.
Second, the slowdown is already visible. Total DAUq was 130.3 million in the second quarter as well, according to the shareholder letter, so the audience did not grow at all between quarters. In the US, daily uniques fell from 53.2 million to 50.7 million. CNBC noted that the US figure missed analyst estimates of 53.5 million.
Third, the readers a Reddit login wall would hit hardest are not where the money is. Reddit says logged-in and app users account for “over 80% of the monetization.” Put differently, the logged-out web audience, which took the biggest hit from falling search referrals, accounts for less than a fifth of Reddit’s monetization.
Why the Reddit login wall test starts outside the US
Huffman did not name the test markets. However, the revenue data explains the choice. A US daily user brought in $13.82 in the quarter, while an international user brought in $2.43, so one American reader is worth about 5.7 international ones. International markets produced $176.1 million, or roughly 20% of revenue, despite holding 61% of daily users.
That makes markets outside the US a cheap place to experiment. If a Reddit login wall scares off casual readers in those countries, the revenue hit is small. Meanwhile, those same markets are where logged-out reading grew fastest, up 33% in a year, so the test should show quickly how many readers convert and how many simply leave.
Huffman told CNBC that Reddit is still deciding what logged-out visitors will be able to see and gave no date for a global rollout. The shareholder letter says only that test results “will inform an optimized version of logged-in-only Reddit globally.” So a full lockout is not confirmed; a partial preview is still possible.

Google’s AI answers broke the old traffic bargain
For the past few years Reddit benefited from Google surfacing forum posts, and many people learned to add “reddit” to their searches. That pipeline is now shrinking. The letter says search referrals were “down meaningfully” in the third quarter and fell by more than 1 million a week on average in October.
Reddit also warned that, if the trend continues, total daily uniques could fall by a “low-double-digit percentage” in the fourth quarter. On a 130 million base, a 10% to 12% decline would mean roughly 13 million to 16 million fewer daily visitors; that is our arithmetic, not a company forecast.
Huffman was blunt on the earnings call. “The reality is, the AI mode does not drive traffic, not for us and not to anybody,” he said, as reported by Reuters. He added that Google is still crawling Reddit “as hard as ever.” Alphabet’s own quarter tells the other half of that story, as we noted in our look at YouTube’s slowing ad growth inside Alphabet.
Not every platform is pulling back from search, though. Discord is moving the other way, letting some public server chats appear in Google Search to win new visitors.
The data deals behind the lock
Traffic is only one motive. The shareholder letter also says logging users in “allows us to protect access to Reddit’s extremely valuable corpus of data.” That corpus now holds more than 27 billion posts and comments.
Reddit’s “other revenue” line, which includes data licensing, rose 35% to $48 million in the quarter. CNBC reported that OpenAI and Google are its two biggest licensing partners, and that Huffman said Reddit remains “in negotiations” with Google. As a result, a Reddit login wall would also strengthen Reddit’s hand at that table: if AI systems can read less of the site for free, a paid deal is worth more.
Twitter tried this in 2023 and lasted five days
Huffman argued that “pretty much all of the major ad-based platforms have gone through this transition.” He also told CNBC that Reddit is “the last platform to provide basically unfettered logged-out access, and that’s largely because of me.”
The closest precedent is not encouraging. On June 30, 2023, Twitter began requiring an account to view tweets, citing data scraping. By July 5, it had quietly removed the requirement for individual tweets. X has kept changing how content travels since then, including how it credits photos reshared from other accounts.
Reddit’s approach differs in one important way. Rather than flipping a switch overnight, it is testing market by market. That gives it room to keep some threads readable without an account, which is probably the version most likely to survive.
Who feels the Reddit login wall first
Searchers who add “reddit” to a query are the obvious group. If the wall arrives in their country, a search result could lead to a sign-up screen instead of an answer. Using the app or an account will likely become the only reliable way in.
Moderators and community builders face a different trade. Fewer drive-by readers means smaller visible audiences, but the letter promises AI-powered moderation tools and more “intentional” joining of subreddits. Communities that rely on newcomers finding them through Google may grow more slowly.
Brands and creators who use Reddit for discovery should watch reach closely. Most of Reddit’s monetization already comes from logged-in and app users, so paid campaigns may hold up. Organic threads that once ranked in search and sent readers to a creator’s video or newsletter, however, could lose that free traffic.
What the next Reddit login wall update should reveal
Reddit’s next quarterly report should answer three questions. Did daily uniques fall by the low double digits it warned of? Did logged-in users grow faster as walls went up? And how many mobile web readers moved to the app? Today only about 13% of eligible mobile web users see the app prompt, according to the letter.
Investors have already voted on the risk. Reuters reported that the stock fell 18% in extended trading after the release, even though revenue rose 53% to $895 million. For now, the Reddit login wall is a test, not a policy. But the numbers suggest the company is ready to trade millions of casual readers for a smaller, signed-in audience it can actually monetize.
