Fourth Wing Is TikTok’s First European BookTok Bestseller of 2026

Rebecca Yarros’s fantasy novel Fourth Wing has been named TikTok’s first European #BookTok Bestseller of the Year for 2026. TikTok and market researcher Media Control announced the ranking on October 8, placing the novel ahead of Binding 13, Heated Rivalry, The Mistake and Saving 6.

The result is not simply a count of viral videos. TikTok says the European list combines activity within the BookTok community with book-market data supplied by Media Control. The published methodology covers participating European bestseller-list markets and identifies Fourth Wing as the leading title for January through August 2026.

What the European BookTok ranking found

In its October 8 announcement, TikTok listed the five leading European BookTok titles of 2026 as:

  1. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
  2. Binding 13 by Chloe Walsh
  3. Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid
  4. The Mistake by Elle Kennedy
  5. Saving 6 by Chloe Walsh

Media Control published the same order in its methodology and results. Its notes identify the European ranking as year-to-date data covering January through August 2026. That date range matters: “Bestseller of the Year” is TikTok’s name for the new honor, but the underlying dataset does not include every month of the calendar year.

Chloe Walsh led the separate author ranking, helped by two books in the top five. Yarros ranked second among authors, followed by Hazel Riley, Rachel Reid and Elle Kennedy. The distinction explains why Fourth Wing can lead the book list while Walsh leads the author list.

How TikTok and Media Control built the list

The ranking draws from the countries where the BookTok bestseller program operates. The initiative began in Germany in 2023, expanded to Austria and Switzerland in 2024, and added the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain in 2026. Media Control says its list evaluates the titles creating strong BookTok interest and succeeding in retail sales.

That makes the result different from an ordinary trending chart. It attempts to connect online attention with purchases, although neither announcement provides a title-by-title sales total or the precise weighting assigned to TikTok activity versus retail data. Readers should therefore treat the order as the result of the partners’ stated methodology, not as a complete audit of every European book sale.

Social Media Today independently reported the result and described the award as based on in-app discussion and in-store sales. Its report also noted the strong presence of commercial romance and fantasy titles across the top five.

Why Fourth Wing fits the BookTok story

First published in 2023, Fourth Wing is the opening novel in Yarros’s Empyrean fantasy series. Its combination of dragons, military training, romance and an established fan community made it a durable BookTok subject rather than a short-lived release-week trend.

The new ranking measures that continuing influence during 2026. It does not mean TikTok created every sale, nor does it establish that Fourth Wing was Europe’s bestselling book across all categories and all retailers. The narrower confirmed claim is that it led the first European BookTok Bestseller of the Year list produced by TikTok and Media Control.

The announcement also lands at a moment when platforms are formalizing the commercial value of creator recommendations. The Daily Vantage recently covered Pinterest’s new option for brands to promote creator Pins, another example of a platform turning creator-led discovery into a measurable marketing product.

What TikTok’s reading survey says—and cannot prove

TikTok released a commissioned survey alongside the ranking. Across Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain, the company says roughly four in five young readers on TikTok reported that their interest in reading had increased in recent years. It also reported that 53% of BookTok participants discovered genres that were new to them and 49% said TikTok had inspired them to buy a book or audiobook.

Those figures are self-reported associations, not proof that TikTok alone caused the changes. Media Control’s published notes say Qualtrics surveyed TikTok users aged 16 and older from September 22–29, 2026, with roughly 500 respondents in each included market. The broader survey also covered markets outside Europe, while TikTok’s article highlighted a five-country European synthesis.

The useful conclusion is modest: BookTok participants say the community affects what they discover and buy, while sales-based rankings show publishers and platforms are trying to quantify that influence. The figures should not be generalized to all European readers.

What happens next

TikTok released the results ahead of the Frankfurt Book Fair, where the platform planned to present BookTok trends with publishers, retailers, authors and readers. The company says more than 50 million BookTok-recommended books were sold across Europe in 2025, a separate estimate published when the bestseller program expanded earlier in 2026.

For Yarros, the new title adds a platform-specific honor to the continuing commercial life of Fourth Wing. For creators and publishers, the more consequential development is the European expansion of a ranking that joins social discussion with store sales.

The result also shows why creator-led cultural coverage needs precise labels. Fourth Wing is the first European BookTok Bestseller of the Year under TikTok and Media Control’s system—not a declaration that it is the universal bestseller across Europe.
